Linda Goode Bryant and Laura Poitras
have done an interesting ninety minute documentary titled Flag WARS. Being a
odd participant in Gentrification, as a black man in an interracial
relationship in a stoic neighborhood, surrounded by two ethnic ghettos
(Latino and a Asian Blend), one stabilized and reclaimed (not quite
gentrified, as it was a dilapidated white area) neighborhood of high value
and a intricate highway system in Atlanta, I am in a interesting position as
a opinionated audience member.
Flag Wars is pretty good, a bit
strange, it's slant seems (?)to be anti gentrification (I am personally mixed
about gentrification) and does not seem to show enough of both sides, but
it is an interesting story about a community going through an identity
crisis.
Production qualities, as far as
cinematography goes are ok at best. Occasionally, bouncing between different
video formats, from seemingly good quality, but sub minidv quality (great
natural lighting though) and occasionally looking like they might of caught
some footage with a camera ball and a laptop running on battery juice. The
film is not a great joy to the eyes, but it's personal tale is enough to
keep you watching and the audio is always sharp.
Two hours previously, I was watching
the Steven Segal and Kenan Ivory Wayans masterpiece The Glimmer Man, it was
kinda ok, in that, sitting at the couch, writing and being distracted
occasionally by the idiot box kinda way, so getting in on with Flag Wars was
cool.
If you don't know anything about
Gentrification, or if you only know it in that watercooler chat kinda way,
here is a way to learn about it from a human perspective. What other
compliment can you give to a little film like this.
